Michelle Obama is no wee wife. But unlike Cherie Blair and Hillary Clinton, she knew better than to try and be co-president, writes Sarah Baxter
In Iowa, on that remarkable winter night when it became clear that Barack Obama could emerge from nowhere and cruise to the White House, his wife, Michelle, and their two young daughters stepped on stage with him to claim victory. He proclaimed her as the “love of my life, the rock of the Obama family, the closer on the campaign trail”.
It is her nickname: the Closer.
The statuesque Michelle, 1.8m tall without heels, with the style of Jackie Onassis, emerged as the power behind the throne in the last few months of her husband’s campaign. She demonstrated a capacity to persuade doubters to back her husband when he couldn’t.
Obama’s aides believe Michelle provided the key to turning her super-cool half-Kenyan, half-Kansan citizen of the world into a regular American. more
