While others wait for help to come in the form of aid from Congress, residents of the greater D.C. area have already seen a one-man stimulus package roll into Union Station — and locals hope the influx of cash and cachet is just beginning.
Destination D.C., the district’s official tourism bureau, doesn’t have hard numbers in yet, but it is fair to say that Inauguration weekend was Christmas in January for retailers, hotels and local attractions. The District’s 95,000 hotel rooms were “booked solid,” said Neil Albert, D.C.’s deputy mayor for economic development, and four of the Smithsonian’s museums had to be closed for purposes of crowd control. more
