"Let's face it," wrote New York Times op-ed columnist Maureen Dowd, "the only bracing symbol of American strength right now is the image of Michelle Obama's sculpted biceps." I wasn't certain if that was a compliment to the U.S. First Lady, or a sharp jab at the unfortunate state of America.
In the column, Dowd quoted fellow conservative columnist, David Brooks, who felt that Michelle Obama had "made her point," that she should stop showing off her arms, or "Thunder and Lightening," as he calls them.
What point has Mrs. Obama made, exactly? That most of us are so out of shape, that we shouldn't be seen with bare arms on television, ready for the whole world to scrutinize? That leaders shouldn't appear formidable? What is this all about? more
