Our Informal but Grand First Lady Is Simply 'Michelle'
Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at 6:34AM Anne here. As previously acknowledged, I feel a bit queasy at times, referring to our magnificent First Lady as 'Michelle'. But Google reminds me this morning, that we only honor her preference:
While her story will become a grand one, we honor Michelle's American right to choose how we portray her. To her loyal readers on this website, she is simply 'Michelle'.
Like all that Frenchifying 'Target' chic nonsense for the fashionista crowd, Michelle Obama hardly needs renaming. We love her just the way she is. No Jackie-O mode is required.
Would She or Wouldn't She?
via WSJ, Christian Dior Fashions fantasy Amidst the CrisisSpeaking of giving Michelle an unnecessary dose of French chic, how do we feel about this 17th century Flemish-painters-inspired dress from Christian Dior's Spring 2998 haute couture collection?
A bit pompous perhaps, in the midst of our global economic meltdown? It does have a "let them eat cake" element of beauty to it. After all, Galliano is a superbly talented designer, capable of capturing the zeitgeist of a Davos moment.
I think Michelle would look her "larger than life", "Amazonian sensual best" in this Christian Dior dress.
There IS a place for fantasy in fashion.
Perhaps French Vogue could shoot our First Lady in a "clothes I would love to wear but won't . . . because they're not Michelle-Style" fashion editorial spread.
We all get to play fashion-escape dressup for a few hours, before knuckling back down to our grim economic reality.
