Isabel Toledo and Michelle ObamaThe Toledos levitated when they saw Michelle Obama walk out on Inauguration Day in one of Isabel's designs. "There was not a dry eye in the house," recalls Ruben, fashion illustrator extraordinaire and Isabel's husband and collaborator for 25 years.

Two days after making history, the giddyness lingers. And, things are not quite back to normal at the Toledo studio. They may never be.

And, those in the fashion police who said Michelle Obama's choice violated daytime fashion rules, Isabel has a message for you: "What rules?? What century are we in? Fashion rules are for amateurs, not for women. Once you grow into your skin, you can forget the rules." more
