As the nation’s latest fashion icon, Obama has been under intense scrutiny, not just for her clothes but for the way she wears her hair. And like those of the first ladies before her, Obama’s hair will help shape public perceptions about who she is.

“Within our contemporary culture, women—much more than men—are judged based on their appearance,” said Rose Weitz, a professor of women and gender studies at Arizona State University. “Part of being a first lady is projecting an image that will best help their husbands succeed.” more
