American Volunteering Rates Increased in 2008, Led by Midwest
Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 1:43PM Oh dear. New York is LAST on the list of states, in terms of volunteering, based on a three-year-rolling average 2006-2008, posted at Volunteering in America.
This fact does not do a lot to enhance our reputation with the rest of the country. We're down there with Nevada. Now I can surmise why people don't have enough time to volunteer in Nevada, with all the casinos, but I wonder what our excuse is in New York state.
The top states for volunteering are:
43.5% Utah
38.9% Nebraska
38.4% Minnesota
38.0% Alaska
37.1% Iowa
36.6% Montana
36.4% South Dakota
36.2% Kansas
35.6% Vermont
35.0% North Dakota
“This report suggests that Americans are responding to the hardship around them by reaching out in service to others, giving their time when they cannot give their money,” said Michelle Obama, the first lady, in a press release. “It reminds us of the generosity of the American spirit, and challenges us to work harder to make service part of the daily life of America.” via Chronicle of Philanthropy
