Michelle Obama, aka 'The Closer', Arrives in Copenhagen
Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at 7:24AM The First Lady has landed in Copenhagen, ready to "go for the gold", in bringing the 2016 Summer Olympics to Chicago, competing against Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo to host the games.
Mrs. Obama's plane landed a little before 11:30 a.m. local time, and she was greeted by a contingency that included Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, his wife, Maggie, Olympic gold medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Chicago 2016 president Lori Healey.
Michelle Obama Arrives in Copenhagen
The NY Times writes that the arrival of President Obama early Fri. morning in Copenhagen, to make a final pitch for Chicago, carries a lot of risk, especially if the games are awarded to another city. Just two weeks ago, POTUS said he was too committed to health care to go to Copenhagen. Yesterday the Senate Finance Committee voted down a public option.
First Lady Michelle Obama arrives in Copenhagen to promote Chicago's 2016 Olympic games bidSimply stated, the POTUS move -- a parochial maneuver for Chicago and only marginally for America (especially when experts are questioning the long-term benefit to Chicago of hosting the games) -- could easily come back to haunt him. See NYTimes: In Pitch for Games, a Gamble for Obama.
I'm not impressed with the idea that Michelle can't handle the bid by herself, but I've accepted the fact there politics are at play in the IOC leaders requiring that leaders follow in the footsteps of then London Prime Minister Tony Blair, and appear before the committee.
There are many foreign policy goodwill reasons why America could benefit from hosting the games in 2016. Is the bid a top national priority now? No. From what I hear and read, Barcelona is the single city to have benefitted enormously from hosting the Olympics.
Chicago has no such plan to "remake" itself for the games. Rather, Chicago hopes to be "discovered" as the great American city that it is.
No offence, but the world's full of very smart people, who have put Chicago in its proper place as an international travel destination. Let's hope the Obamas being home the gold, because the decision for POTUS to support FLOTUS is ill-conceived in my playbook, if Chicago doesn't win the bid.
Clearly, the Chicago bid sends a signal that we are a new America. BUT, many people are globalists now and genuinely committed to a Brazilian, third-world country win, just as the G-20 abandoned the G-8 group last week in Pittsburgh.
America has enjoyed the spotlight for decades and Brazil has huge support, going into the voting.
As for costing the American taxpayers money (because the Olympics always do) and was it really worth the investment, we'll be focused on far more important issues by 2016, and also the election for a president.
BTW, are there significant "green" initiatives attached to Chicago?
With all my own research on the Internet, I'm clueless why Chicago thinks America should be focused on its desire to host the Olympics. If the bid requires the American president in attendance, when the roof is falling at home, maybe you and I should understand why a Chicago bid is so important, as an example of new American thinking. Anne
PS: A nice Michelle footnote from the Chicago Tribune: Michelle said that "she had sat next to Brazilian first lady Marisa Leticia Lula da Silva during the G-20 summit in Pittsburgh -- and added that she adores her. Still, "I said, you know, I'm going to hug you now, and then I'm going after you in Copenhagen. And she said, 'You too.' So (the) gloves are off."
