Michelle's Short Shorts: Does Her Design Democracy Fashion Choice Unconsciously Appease or Confuse Constituents?

Robin Givhan has a must-read column online now and published tomorrow in the Washington Post's Sunday edition. Givhan weighs in on Michelle Obama's short shorts, worn to the Rocky Mountains.

I stayed on the sidelines in this discussion, because I'm desparately busy over at Anne of Carversville, and I hate stupid conversations about the First Lady's shorts, when I'm more concerned about tens of thousands of women being raped and murdered in the Congo.

Robin (who I have criticized unmercifully at times for being a total stick-in-the-mud on Madonna) also asks that question: (Kind and civil enemies of fashion: Do I have more pressing concerns on my to-discuss list? Yes, I do. But I'm sandwiching this in between negotiating world peace and restricting short selling on Wall Street.)

Design Democracy

First lady Michelle Obama debuts her shorts as she steps out of the presidential limo at the Phoenix airport on Sunday.Last night, I checked Mrs-O, and they blessed the First Lady's right to wear anything she wants, at any time. Everything is perfect in the land of Mrs-O: Horray for Shorts. Ten years ago, I began writing about the Design Democracy movement in fashion, so I'm right there with Mrs-O. It's a trend.

What I almost wrote the other day, until I said "forget it, Anne, who cares about your opinion here," is that I would not have worn the shorts, under any circumstances, as First Lady of the United States. And I'm complimented on my long, toned legs all the time -- as recently as this past Wednesday evening.

As a Smart Sensuality woman, I believe in the public expression of female physicality -- especially in the midst of the burqa debates about covering up women. I'm deadly concerned about any global attempts to put a veil over my head, and I freely admit that I don't trust any politicians -- including America's own -- not to kowtow to the attempt to keep women in their place.

Women are fodder worldwide for men negotiating deals with the Obama administration.

Within this huge concern about women's rights, I support Michelle Obama's right to wear shorts if she so chooses.

Robin Givhan's argument is a more nuanced one, about appropriate dressing for the First Lady of the United States. Givhan's background and degrees are in popular culture, including the role of fashion in communicating and reflecting societal mores.

Clothes Send Cultural Messages

Givhan writes: Fashion can be an indispensable tool for delivering a message about approachability and empathy. But that doesn't mean it would be a good idea for the first lady to wear a pink velour Juicy Couture track suit when she travels, no matter how real and modern and comfortable it might be. No matter that so many other women of her generation choose travel clothes that mimic pajamas. When the first couple disembarks from Air Force One, military personnel stand at attention, shutters click and minions scurry. It's not as though they are climbing out of their own personal RV with their backpacks -- like celebrities caught unawares by the paparazzi.

Ultimately, the first lady can't be -- nor should she be -- just like everyone else. Hers is a life of responsibilities and privileges. She gets the fancy jet. She has to dress for the ride.

Michelle and Malia Obama decending Air Force One, via Huff PoLike Robin, I totally agree that fashion and clothes send cultural messages. I'm no first lady, and I've always believed that trying hard to be average, easily reduces one to looking common.

I admit now -- thanks to Robin's digital kick in the butt -- that this was exactly my thought, when I saw the photo of Michelle Obama overlooking the Grand Canyon.

The Obamas at Grand Canyon National ParkOne of the most glorious women in the world was looking mighty common. Before you think I'm too high-faluttin for my own good, let me explain.

I understand that POTUS is getting hammered on health care at town meetings in America and looking not elitist is very important right now. Michelle Obama shouldn't get nailed wearing $700 Lanvin sneakers this week.

Yet, clothes send messages. The cost of clothes and choice of what to wear are different subjects.

For all their fawning over Jackie Kennedy, even Mrs-O didn't volunteer that under no circumstances would Mrs. Kennedy have made a public appearance -- private moment or not -- dressed as FLOTUS last weekend.

At a time when President Obama's character and strategy are taking a beating (see all the new articles in Michelle-Style Mr. President), the First Lady could have sent a message of stability saying "I'm still here; you can count on me."

Queen Rania in the south of France, August 14, 2009I've said 10 times that FLOTUS scared the heck out of me at the Vatican. Actually she mobilized me into action on women's rights, which is a good thing.

Unlike Michelle Obama, Queen Rania did not give me nightmares, greeting the Pope in Jordan. She retained her stature as a respectful, Smart Sensuality modern woman. (Note, Queen Rania was not at the Vatican, but there's no attempt to appease Pope Benedict in her choice of clothes.)

King Abdullah II of Jordan, right, and Queen Rania of Jordan, center, receives Pope Benedict XVI, left, on his arrival in Amman, Jordan Friday, May 8, 2009.

Michelle's shorts sent a similar message to me. They said: "Hey, we're with you here, my town hall meeting friends. S(he) who yells the loudest will end the public component in health care reform -- we hear you. No problem. Forgettabout it. We're not elitist types here. We're like you guys -- Sarah Palin isn't the only one to relate on a down-home level. We're populists, too. "

The very question asked this week of President Obama, is the issue Hillary supporters -- who always liked him -- expressed as our concern about our president. Is he tough enough, politically savvy and experienced enough, to strategize America through these choppy waters?

The message both Michelle's veil and now the shorts have sent to me is that I have reason to be concerned about the explosive question asked by Politico's Roger Simon earlier in the week: Does President Obama have the guts?

For me, Michelle Obama represents the guy I elected at all times. When our beloved FLOTUS gets dressed in the morning, she does so, sending a calculated message to the general public. I know this reality, like I know my middle name is Anne.

Journalistic Guts

Back to Robin, who didn't politicize the topic of the shorts, as I have just done. Thanks Ms. Givhan for saying what you think, no matter what the polls say about Americans supporting Michelle's right to wear shorts, if she so chooses.

What we share -- Robin and I -- is the knowledge, not the opinion, that clothes speak messages when worn by the first lady of the United States.

There's no such thing as private time with photographers around. Michelle knows this fact, and so does her husband, the man I elected to represented me, according to a set of new-day principles.

Consistency of style means everything to me, along with consistency of message. I love Michelle's independent spirit and support her right to break out of the box style-wise.

When I think she's pandering with her wardrobe, then I wonder what's really on her husband's mind and what he intends to do next.

Personally, I think Michelle's been a bouncing ball since Moscow. She's changed her clothes and stopped talking in public, except for her navy veterans day welcome home. FLOTUS is the good wife, a Traditionalist, not the Smart Sensuality, Cultural Creative woman she was on Inauguration Day.

Instead of worrying about the opposition, the Obamas need to also stay close to the moderates who elected him (and indirectly) her. Presently, they have me strung out all over the place, and I admit that I don't like it one bit. Anne
