Gates, Obamas, Jarrett and Other Royals Will Create Lots of Martha's Vineyard Buzz next Month

The image of Henry Louis Gates Jr. riding around Oak Bluffs Martha's Vineyard on his big red-white-and-black tricycle named the "Soul Mobile" is a very different image, than that of the 'angry black man' threatening police officers in his Cambridge home the other night.

(Frank Franklin Li/ Associated Press) Professor Gates can't run fast, having lived his life with one leg shorter than the other. The result is many painful surgeries and a sensitivity to people having a tough time in life.

Today's Boston Globe gives us more insights into Henry Louis Gates Jr. The Harvard professor an intellectual luminary was raised in a working-class family in the small West Virginia town of Piedmont, tucked between the Allegheny Mountains and the Potomac River Valley.

Professor Gates has traded one small town for another, becoming a resident of Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard.

We're assuming that the Obamas are headed to the Oak Bluffs section on Martha's Vineyard come August. We previously profiled Oak Bluffs at Michelle-Style. If so, they may see Gates riding his "Soul Mobile" 16 miles from the large plantation-style house he rents in Oak Bluffs -- affectionately called Tara -- to Katama Beach.

Islanders who know which house the Obamas will be renting say that the home isn't that of prominent Boston lawyer Wayne Budd. “The picture I received looks like it could be West Chop,” this friend says, referring to a neighborhood across the harbor. “But West Chop is totally white—so totally white that it would be a surprise.”

BlackAmericans.com sums it up well, saying life in Martha's Vineyard will be mighty crowded, with three sets of American royalty -- the Obamas, the Clintons, and Caroline Kennedy arriving at the same time.

If Professor Gates knocks out a 16 mile ride on his "Soul Mobile", perhaps he'll stop by Valerie Jarrett's house, where the Obamas spent their Martha's Vineyard vacation last summer.

Jarrett is profiled in a New York Times cover story this weekend, but available now online. It's said that President Obama will "no" to everyone but two women: Michelle and Valerie Jarrett. According to the NYT, Obama runs all major decisions by Jarrett.

The focus isn't black and white, but black and black. There is a social hierarchy in Oak Bluffs, and it runs deep, according to press accounts.

It will be a soul-searching moment, having so much brainpower and accomplishment congregating around the fresh wounds of the Henry Louis Gates Jr. experience. Police reports depict Gates as an arrogant, belligerent man. Friends and colleagues describe him as an affable, witty, driven to excellent kind of guy.

In case we think that Professor Gates is only outspoken with Cambridge police officers, the Boston Globe reports that during an episode of Gates’s “Wonders of the African World’’ television series, he asked one of his African hosts why his ancestors sold Gates’s ancestors into slavery, sparking a provocative discussion.

Perhaps Professor Gates just refuses to wear a mask in life, the kind most of us put on for appearances. When we run into those folks in life, they can be mighty hard on the rules of social etiquette.

America will be seeing the pinacle of black power society in a few weeks, as they congregate on Martha's Vineyard. One wonders whether Gates and the Obamas will be taking a long walk together on the beach.

I'm assuming that Michelle gets to come along, of course.

Her status is a bit MIA these days, shakeup in the East Wing or not. I wonder where West Winger Jarrette weighs in on the subject of how to manage Michelle these days. I'm sure we'll see soon enough . . . or hear something from our beloved FLOTUS.  Anne
