The Obamas Bring Hawaii Home to the White House
Thursday, June 25, 2009 at 7:50PM It's a big day for the Obamas.
The whole First Family helped fill thousands of backpacks for children of military servicemen and women. No, you're not seeing double. Huff Po calls Sasha's outfit a 'mini me' ode to Michelle.
"Serving our country is not just something that we should expect our members of our armed forces to do," Obama said, "That's something that we should expect all of us as citizens to do."
Besides their daughters, the Obamas were joined by members of Congress and their families, and volunteers from nonprofit organizations. Today's events at Fort McNair were part of the "united We Serve" program, kicked off by Michelle in San Francisco earlier in the week.
The national service initiative will continue through Sept. 11, now designated as a National Day of Service and Rembrance by Congress.
Remember, today was not all work and no play. The Obamas brought a bit of Hawaii to the South Lawn of the White House this evening, entertaining members of Congress and their families with a luau.
Michelle gave guests a preview of her hula dancing techniques and word that lessons will be offered this evening. Guests will be joined by Polynesian dancers and fire blowers.
Obama Foodorama reports that internationally acclaimed and award-winning Hawaiian chef Alan Wong has created tonight's menu.
On the menu at Thursday night's White House luau, via Politico: wasabi potato salad, farm green salad, Lomi Lomi salmon, stuffed new potatoes, BBQ baby back ribs, Kalua Pig, shrimp and clams, tilapia tempura rolls, crispy chicken hoagies, grilled lamb chops, spiced short ribs, strawberry Tiramisu and chocolate bars.
via Mrs.-OThe highlight of the evening apparently isn't Michelle or even Bo, who has arrived without a lei -- what's up with that? Perhaps Bo will be wearing a plastic lei, like everyone else. Here we go; he's got one.
Guests tonight will have the opportunity to dunk Rahm Emanuel. Politico asks if Emannuel is charming or charmless. I guess we'll find out later. Anne
