Michelle Obama Is the New Gal in America's Soup Kitchens
Friday, March 6, 2009 at 6:43AM Continuing her "getting-to-know-Washington-tour", First Lady stopped by DC's Miriam's Kitchen. Michelle brought her helping hands for dishing up the White House prepared mushroom risotto; eight cases of high-quality food donated by White House staff.
The NYTimes reports: “How are you doing?” Mrs. Obama asked the astonished patrons as they lined up for risotto, steamed broccoli, fruit salad and apple-carrot muffins. “My job here is to serve you.”
Serve them she did, although word is that Mrs. Obama was told to cut down on the size of her risotto portions.
According to the Miriam's Kitchen website, there are more than 6,000 homeless men, women and children homeless in D.C. on any given night. Miriam's Kitchen serves about 4,000 homeless people each year, while also providing social services assistance.
The nutritious food at Miriam's Kitchen fits beautifully into the Team Obama strategy of promoting healthy eating generally in America, with no differentiation between wealthy and the poor. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation operates on a similar platform regarding health care -- or the value of a human life -- in Third World countries.
Hear Michelle's message about helping each other in America in the YouTube video, released by Miriam's Kitchen. A
