Will the Obama-Effect Inspire an African Fashion Moment?
Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at 10:37AM Is America ready for an African fashion moment? I'm skeptical yet intrigued.
Vanity Fair's April 2009 fashion feature African Queens is no 'sleevegate', showing multiple levels of arm flesh in their ode to designers celebrating Afrophilia, or the influence of Africa on fashion. Primarily driven by European designers, can the look take hold in America?
CONGO LINES: Left, Jil Sander dress, constructed of cutout strands of acetate and silk; Jimmy Choo faux-leopard bag; Sergio Rossi sandals. ZANZI-BRA: Prada earrings, shoes, and crinkled-cotton separates; Marc Jacobs faux-giraffe bag. Simply stated, Africa is rarely embraced as a major source of inspiration for American fashion. (See The Obama-Effect on New York Runways and in the Global Press.) The story in Europe, where former Asian and African colonies provide a historical and contemporary influence on design, is the exact opposite.
To date, Michelle Obama has embraced American designers exclusively. Her clothes haven't payed tribute to global culture in any way.
Will FOTUS make a different fashion gesture, when she travels to Europe next week?
As a Smart Sensuality woman, with Cultural Creative values, Michelle Obama is a global thinker. It could be interesting to go through her own wardrobe from her early days with POTUS and even at Princeton or Harvard.
I once wore African-inspired clothes on weekends. I wonder about Michelle.
With the American economy in turmoil, Michelle is sending a homegrown, 'I'm one of you guys' message in the early days of her First Ladyship.
I can't help thinking, though, that one of these days, Africa will grab Michelle's heartstrings, perhaps in the work of Marc Jacobs, designer of his own label in America (and also Marc) and Louis Vuitton in Paris.
Design fusion is a huge trend in global design, activated by travel, immigration and the Internet. Let us not forget colonization.
Our Smart Sensuality focus on the problems of young women internationally, could have an influence on design and fashion trends. It's a long shot, but . . .
We have an interesting article from The Age Australia today: Out of Africa, fashion's new black, on that very subject.
Angelique Deng wears Jenny Bannister, Abul Akol sports Nicolangela, and Marina Vasili dons Thurley for the L'Oreal festival. The Age, AustraliaStephen Bucknall of FRM Model Management signed on 15 African girls and five African boys late last year and has just launched a website for his Asian and African models.
"In the last few years I have started getting a lot of girls from Sudan and Ethiopia coming in to see me about modelling … I only had one or two on my books because there just wasn't the demand for them but now things are changing, slowly. More and more people are wanting to see African girls for fashion shows or editorial and even occasionally for TV commercials. (Remember, we're speaking about Australia here.)
Many of these new African models are arriving from the refugee camps. It's this possible tie -- one bringing fashion designers together with Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama -- that intrigues me. Or, Carla Bruni launches the initiative and gets gal pals Hillary and Michelle involved as junior lieutenants.
Reality hits me now. Bottom line, for fashion to sell, it must be embraced by the culture.
Who can help this initiative? Is the American music industry ready for an African moment?
I'm skeptical but also intrigued, because Vanity Fair April 2009 also features an interview with Amadou Bagayoko and Mariam Doumbia, and the release of their new album "Welcome to Mali."
Picking up this video from YouTube, I assure you that this is Parisian music and Mali music, but not New York music. It's Anne walking around Virgin Paris, spending $500 on Euro CD's music because this music isn't even sold in America. I can't imagine that American subculture -- forget mainstream -- has an appetite for the sound.
Yet, it would be so interesting to be wrong in this matter.
After all, we Smart Sensuality women are globalists.
