Tomatoes, Peas & Watermelon(???) Coming to New White House South Lawn Vegetable Garden

Update: Michelle is breaking ground this morning (Friday) for the garden, giving Alice Waters, the mother of this idea, a big sigh. We've just posted last Sunday's 60 Minutes, Alice Waters interview over at Anne of Carversville, Cultural Creatives.

Those gorgeous boots worn by First Lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday, when volunteering with YouthBuildUSA's "green" house building project, will soon get another workout on the White House Lawn Friday morning, when Michelle digs up the first patch of the new vegetable garden.

Somewhere, not too far from the First Swingset -- installed for ALL the White House children -- not just Sasha and Malia, the First Lady will be tending the nation's first vegetable garden since Eleanor Roosevelt's victory garden.

via Redacted RecipesIn her Oprah Magazine interview, Michelle announced that she's working on this wonderful new garden project, one designed with children in mind.

"We want to use it as a point of education, to talk about health and how delicious it is to eat fresh food, and how you can take that food and make it part of a healthy diet. You know, the tomato that's from your garden tastes very different from one that isn't. And pease -- what is it like to eat peas in season? Now we want the Hite House to be a place of education and awareness. And hopefully, kids will be interested because there are kids living there."

Today, via the excellent blog Obama Foodorama, via ABC News, we learn the new White House vegetable garden will be dug up and planted on the South grounds of the White House -- near the fountain but out of view of the main house.

This Lawn is Your Lawn

Unfortunately, there will be no beets in the garden. POTUS doesn't like them, even though they are not only very sexy but healthy as well. I'm shaking my head over the beet situation. Would someone please try to reason with the man?

I have no business suggesting that watermelons will be grown in the new White House veggie garden. If you don't know the story, the one former mayor's suggestion that watermelons might make their way to Pennsylvania Avenue caused a dramatic, racist accusation around the land.

My own position on watermelon has not been neutral. I love it every day of my life (had some yesterday) because it is healthy, delicious and considered an aphrodisiac.

I wrote a journal article on this watermelon controversy, and the majority of my supportive, loving friends have explained that I am wrong in my view. They tell me that it's understandable that African Americans want no watermelon references in the nation's culture.

Of course they are right. I'm one lone voice in my social set, who is pro watermelon for Washington. I say that we must move on from watermelon as hate fruit, and embrace it for the stupendously sexy, healthy fruit that it is.

I have a hunch that our all-knowing Michelle will make a quiet statement on the subject of watermelon. I'm willing to bet that like me, FOTUS and POTUS think that it's time to redeem watermelon for all. I bet they serve it at a White House picnic.

Time will tell.

For now, let's celebrate Michelle's views on fresh food and her desire to redirecting the nation's eating habits.

I intended to install this recipe for Stacked Watermelon and Heirloom Tomato Salad, over on my Anne of Carversville 'Food Seduction' sexy food blog.

But the NYTimes just reported that Michelle will be growing . . . and POTUS will be weeding the heirloom tomatoes, rest assured. Oh, I can hear the pundits now!

"A real delicious heirloom tomato is one of the sweetest things that you’ll ever eat,” she said. “And my children know the difference, and that’s how I’ve been able to get them to try different things.

via redacted recipesNow, I share it with you instead. I've decided to compile my core group of 100 simple, sexy, fresh, healthy pleasurable -- guaranteed to enhance the nation's libidos -- food recipes.

To make the salad, alternate rounds of watermelon (you can use a biscuit cutter) with slices of ripe heirloom tomatoes and top the stack with basil, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. A sprinkling of freshly ground black pepper and little fleur de sel adds contrast to the sweetness of the melon and tomatoes. Serve it with a medallion of goat cheese on the side (or in the stack, if you like, though it isn't as pretty that way).

Trust me that this Stacked Watermelon and Heirloom Tomato Salad will be included. My mouth is watering, just looking at the photo. Anne
