Morning Sugar: Michelle Obama, Sweet Honey in the Rock, & the African Children's Choir
Thursday, February 19, 2009 at 7:41AM I've decided that there are advantages to being a woman over 40, writing this Daily Gumbo column. I have a looooong memory. Did I say 40 Yes! I'm sticking to 40.
I went looking for some Sweet Honey in the Rock video for you, because I actually remember the first time that I heard Sweet Honey in the Rock. I was at one of those three-day music festivals somewhere in America . . . perhaps Buffalo.
Strong women tend to hang out together.
On my way to find us some Sweet Honey, I also discovered First Lady Michelle Obama's video from yesterday, in which she speaks to 6th and 7th graders from District of Columbia schools at the White House, in honor of Black History month. And of course, Sweet Honey performed for the kids.

And now, to fill your day with some much-needed sugar, Sweet Honey in the Rock. I like the message here, especially for Black History month. Correctly so, many people are concerned that with the election of Barack Obama, the endemic problems of racism will be glossed over, as we celebrate our huge step forward in America.
I gotta tell you, though. I'm in the mood for something a bit more lively . . . like "Walking In the Light" by The African Children's Choir.
