Inside the Sense & Sensuality Fashion Mind: A Thinking Person's Take On Sexy Clothes

Josh Patner has written fashion editorial for several years at least. I just checked his Google references. And yet, I don't think he really understand women's heads all that well, based on his comments at Slate.

Patner writes a fair question about Jason Wu's Fall 2009 collection, shown last week in New York: Can Jason Wu Do More Than Dress Michelle Obama?

You remember that Michelle wore Jason Wu's one-shoulder, white confectionary extravaganza to the Inaugural Balls.

Patner writes: He (Jason Wu) makes the kind of clothes Mrs. Obama loves: assertive and romantic, colorful and shapely. He also makes the kinds of clothes few of his contemporaries are interested in: Most have abandoned the Ladies Who Lunch.

Jason Wu Fall 2009 st Style.comMy reaction is: "What is he talking about . . . Ladies Who Lunch?"

Oscar de la Renta makes young-looking clothes for Ladies Who Lunch. So do Carolina Herrera and Ralph Lauren.

But Jason Wu? I don't think so. I do agree with Cathy Horn's commentary, that Jason Wu's clothes possess a time-tested reality that's part of the Oscar de la Renta fashion brand.

Wu is focused on translating that sensibility for a younger, somewhat more self-expressive woman.

To suggest that women are not interested in these clothes is well . . . inexperienced, out-of-the-loop . . . I'm not sure what to call it, because I haven't read Josh Patner's resume.

Style.com weighs in with a similar Sense & Sensuality review of the Jason Wu collection:

. . . Wu's just giving the retailers—three times as many as last season have booked appointments—what they want. As a fledgling designer in this kind of economy, that's smart business.

If I can take Josh Patner to the land of real women's lives in an economically-challenged economy, I make the following points:

• While I personally love some of the biker-chic looks, not only are they not right for our First Lady, they are generally restricted in wearability for most women.

Jason Wu is trying to stay in business.

• NYTimes style writer Cathy Horn wrote a piece yesterday Designers Square Off: Sexy vs. Classy, in which she praised designer Prabal Garung, whose ideal woman is “the thinking man’s sex symbol”.

I love the Sense & Sensuality attitude of Prabal Garung. His approach to dressing women with a thinking man's perspective brings Donna Karan to mind.

PRABAL GURUNG Cashmere swing jackets over satin dresses or leather trousers.Any writer -- in this case Josh Patner --  who thinks that the work of Thierry Mugler and Claude Montana, French designers who tamed the extremes of sex-fetish gear in the 1980s, are the men for today's fashion moment is off kilter, or hanging out in sex dungeons on the weekend . . . which I agree is a serious trend. (See my SexyFutures blog.)

Bringing Jason Wu and MIchelle Obama into this fetish wear mindset is . . . well, mental masturbation, in my humble opinion.

Absolutely, S&M and female dominance are on the move, but suggesting that these clothes are what women want to wear to work is probably written by a man of whatever sexual persuasion (I don't know) who is either not getting enough sex, or lives in total testosterone overload.

Neither are of use for women trying to focus on a Fall 2009 wardrobe.

Not to worry.

Michelle has her own style, and so do the rest of us Sense & Sensuality women. Intelligent minds will prevail here, and we know that Jason Wu deserves a round of applause for his commitment to creating  assertive and romantic, colorful and shapely clothes that real American women, most of whom are not Ladies Who Lunch, want to wear.  Anne
