I'm entirely prepared to believe that Sarah Brown is an attractive, down-to-earth woman and an excellent mother. But can we get our heads round the notion that Sarah, just like her friend Michelle, is not elected. She's not in the public eye in her own right. She's there, just like in the old days, because of the man to whom she's married. She is that traditional figure, the wife of a powerful man and without him, she wouldn't register on the radar. Unlike, say, Margaret Thatcher.

I'd say we're elevating Michelle, Sarah and Carla to public eminence to compensate for the embarrassing fact that elected women leaders can be counted on one finger. The only woman in Europe any self-respecting feminist should have as pin-up is the one who got to the top on her merits. I refer, obviously, to the sublime German Chancellor, Angela Merkel. more
