Why Michelle Obama Replaced Her Chief of Staff: Politics Daily
Saturday, June 27, 2009 at 9:24AM The inside story of why Michelle Obama switched her chief of staff is emerging. Ousted Jackie Norris, replaced by Mrs. Obama's friend Susan Sher, tried to "take on" White House Social Secretary Desirée Rogers, who not only is a personal pal of the first lady's, but is best buddies with White House Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett.
How Norris didn't figure out that she shouldn't try to boss around Rogers, I don't know.
The Washington Post's Lois Romano reports that Mrs. Obama was more comfortable bringing in Sher, a peer, than working with Norris, whom she got to know during the long months leading up to the Iowa caucuses.
Sher and Mrs. Obama met when both were working in Chicago's City Hall. Mrs. Obama went on to work for Sher at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Sher, Rogers and Jarrett live in the same Georgetown apartment building.
Writes Romano: "Norris had been Obama's Iowa state coordinator and had become close to Michelle Obama during the campaign. But Norris said in an interview that she came to agree that she wasn't a good fit for this job -- which requires not only management and policy skills but also inevitably touches on the first lady's personal and family life. more
