Mobama's mantra: The First Mom is a mom first: Globe and Mail
Saturday, May 9, 2009 at 8:41AM Quoted via (Canada's) Globe and Mail:
No matter how long you've been at it, being a mother is a constant balancing act. Yesterday, for instance, instead of handing in this column on time, I spent the day running around preparing for my daughter's return from university: buying groceries, putting out flowers and fluffing up her room. Then I headed off to pick her up at the airport and, after lugging her suitcases into the house, whipped up a fabulous, complicated dinner of her favourite dishes.
It is sometimes absurd, the lengths we go to, not necessarily to be "perfect" mothers, but to soothe, pet and welcome back our children into the fold. But as every mother (including, luckily, my editor) appreciates, that kind of devotion is the heart of mothering. Happily, I no longer have to feel embarrassed about being such a lousy feminist. Thanks to Michelle Obama, being a mom first is suddenly okay. more
