Michelle Obama Visits the EPA, Wearing Oceanic Blue and Bearing a Warm Message
Friday, February 27, 2009 at 9:21AM First Lady Michelle Obama didn't wear green to visit the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) yesterday, as she did to honor Stevie Wnder on Tuesday evening. The First Lady was dressed in Blue Velvet, and her arms were covered!
I'm not suggesting that the First Lady chose her outfit with her message in mind, but actually Blue is a new environmental color, one associated with oceans and water.
Photo via Huffington PostMichelle Obama has always liked bright colors, and she wears them so dazzlingly well.
According to ABC News, Mrs. Obama told the nearly 1000 workers at the EPA: "It's a new day," Mrs. Obama told a crowd of nearly 1,000 workers. "And the truth is, we can't wait one more minute. The recently signed recovery package includes billions of dollars for the EPA to continue to clean up our communities and improve the health of our fellow Americans. The time is now."
The First Lady met privately with a small group of EPA employees prior to the event, listening to their concerns. The desire of the Obamas to listen to "average citizens and workers" is a key part of their communication and governing strategy.
From letting kitchen workers speak about last Sunday's Governor's Dinner to now organizing a lottery, so that average citizens can win a seat at White House dinners, the Obamas are trying to build bridges in a "flat organization" governing style.
Every day, we see this strategy in motion in small ways. Very exciting to watch. Anne
